Using your client portal

For clients - accepting your invitation, your home, your to-do list, uploading documents, messages, appointments, your cases and your profile.

For: Client

On this page

Your law firm uses LegalBook to run its office. The client portal is where you see what the firm needs from you, send documents and messages, and follow your case in plain language. The portal is in English and Spanish; change the language at the top of the screen.

LegalBook is the firm's software. It is not your lawyer and does not give legal advice. For any question about your case, send your firm a message.

Accept your invitation

Your firm sends you an invitation by email or on paper with a QR code. (Invitations by text message need live text messaging, which is not available yet.)

  1. Open the invitation link (or scan the code).
  2. Sign in with your LegalBook account, or create one. Use the email address the invitation was sent to.
  3. If your firm asks you to accept portal terms, read and accept them.

You then land on your Home. You can add the portal to your phone's home screen; see Installing LegalBook on your phone.

Home

Your home shows what needs you now: tasks to do, new messages, upcoming appointments and recent updates on your cases.

On a phone, the main sections are at the bottom of the screen: Home, To-do, Messages and Docs. Everything else is under More: My cases, Appointments, Payments, Notifications, Learn and Profile.

To-do

To-do lists what your firm has asked you to do. Each task is one of:

  • Upload documents,
  • answer a questionnaire,
  • sign a document,
  • pay an invoice,
  • confirm an appointment,
  • verify your information,
  • provide an item (for example, bring an original to the office).

Open a task to see what is needed, with examples and help. If you are stuck, ask for help from the task; your firm is notified. Questionnaires save your answers as you go, so you can stop and come back.

Upload documents

  1. Open the task, or go to Docs and choose upload.
  2. Take a photo or choose a file for each item requested.
  3. Send.

Each file is checked before your firm uses it. If something is wrong (for example a page is missing), the firm asks you to send it again and tells you why. Docs has tabs for what was Requested, what came From you, and what the firm Shared with you.

Messages

Send your firm a secure message from Messages: a general question, a question about your case status, a document, a bill or an appointment, or a request for work outside what the firm agreed to do for you. You can attach files. Your firm aims to acknowledge each message within the time it has set.

My cases

My cases shows each case with its progress: milestones marked Done or Coming up, written in plain language, plus what you still need to do and your next appointments.

Appointments

Appointments lists upcoming and past appointments, with what to expect. You can confirm, ask to reschedule, or cancel where your firm allows it, and book an appointment yourself if your firm has turned that on. Times are shown in your time zone, with the office's time beside them when they differ.

Payments

Payments lists your invoices. Not available yet: paying online. When it is available, choosing Pay takes you to the payment provider's own secure page; LegalBook never asks for your card number.

Profile

Your name and picture belong to your LegalBook account and are changed there. To change your address, phone or email, send a change request from Profile; your firm checks it with you before changing your record. Profile also holds your notification choices, who else has access to your portal, and your security settings.
