Firm settings
The configuration hub, settings that need an attorney's decision, and where each setting's value comes from.
For: Owner
On this page
Firm settings live in Configuration in the Firm workspace (press g c). You need the Firm owner or Firm administrator role to change most of them.
The configuration hub
Configuration has these tabs: Firm profile, Offices, Brands, Practice areas & services, Languages, Hours & holidays, Teams, Settings and Feature flags.
Module configuration screens sit beside it in the sidebar, under Configuration: Phone, Templates, Mailboxes, Intake forms, Intake settings, Documents, Workflows and Workflow packs, Routing, Work types, SLA policies, KPIs, Scheduling, Deadline rules, Hours & holidays, Knowledge base, Playbooks, Notifications, Reporting, Search, AI and Integrations. Retention, Legal holds and Data classification are under Compliance.
Settings that need an attorney
Some settings encode a legal or ethical judgment. They are marked Attorney decision in the Settings tab, and their editor says: This setting encodes a legal or operational judgment. A licensed attorney or the firm's operations lead must decide it; LegalBook ships only a safe default.
Until they are set, these settings stay in their safe default, which is always the do-nothing or escalate-to-a-person option. Examples:
| Setting | Safe default |
|---|---|
| Call recording mode | Off |
| Consent and disclosure wording | Nothing is read until approved |
| Who clears conflicts | Attorney |
| Attorney review when an intake is flagged | On |
| Open a matter when an engagement is signed | Off |
| Weekend and holiday deadline roll | An attorney verifies; no automatic roll |
| Internal deadline buffer | 5 days |
| Attorney gates in workflow packs | Not yet reviewed |
| What happens when a payment fails | Flag only |
| Default retention | Keep indefinitely; nothing automatic |
Every one of these is listed by onboarding step 19, Configure firm-specific policy overlays. Only a firm owner, attorney or supervising attorney can set them, and a reason is required and kept in the audit log.
Where a value comes from
Each setting shows its effective value and where it comes from: the platform default, a workflow pack, the firm, an office or a single matter. The more specific level wins. Opening a setting shows its current source, when it was set and the platform default.
Feature flags
Feature flags shows which optional features are on for the firm, read-only. LegalBook staff manage flags.
Firm profile
The Firm profile tab holds the firm's name, legal name, brand colour, logo, default time zone and language, coverage package and whether organization members are enrolled automatically. See Branding and logos.
